How Do Barrier Arms Work for Parking and Access Control?

← Back to FAQ
Short answer

A barrier arm is a motorized aluminum arm that lifts to let a vehicle through and lowers behind it, cycling in one to three seconds. It controls traffic — parking lots, parkades, gated communities, loading docks — but it isn't a security barrier: anyone can walk around it. Pair it with card readers, plate recognition or a pay station, and use a real gate where you need to stop people, not just cars.

Barrier arm gates are everywhere — parking garages, toll roads, gated communities, loading docks. They're popular because they're fast, reliable, and relatively inexpensive compared to full gate systems.

How They Work

A barrier arm operator raises and lowers a long aluminum arm across a traffic lane. The arm blocks vehicle passage when down and allows it when raised. Most modern barrier arms can cycle in 1–3 seconds, making them ideal for high-traffic applications.

What We Install

We primarily install LiftMaster barrier arm operators for their reliability and myQ smart platform integration. For high-security applications, we also offer crash-rated barrier systems that meet ASTM anti-ram standards.
